Whidbey Environmental Action Network
This was Art’s contribution to a recent fundraising letter.
In 1996 a band called Blue Nectar played a benefit concert for WEAN and its tree protecting. This was Art’s somewhat cynical comment.
In 2002 Seattle Pacific University proposed to cut down some of Whidbey’s last ancient forest to build a conference center at Camp Casey. The county was only too pleased to help. WEAN, of course, disagreed, and went to got a legal ruling to stop them.
By 1998 WEAN had tied up Island County with so many successful appeals that it had effectively shut down development. The commissioners considered us a definite pain in the hindquarters.
In the late 1990s, with much federal land closed to logging because of Spotted owl concerns, timber prices rose and people were logging land they would never have considered before. The effects on the island were striking.
Island County’s commissioners were insisting in 2006 that cows in the creek had nothing to do with deteriorating water quality. WEAN brought a sample to a public hearing and dared the commissioners to have a drink.
Art reflects WEAN’s concern for what we’re leaving future generations.
Art’s view of how WEAN stopped SPU from cutting the ancient forest.
We got a lot of mileage out of this one. Art reflected the general perception that any bad proposal which was stopped in its tracks was WEAN’s doing. Of course a lot were . . .
Art has little patience with hypocrisy
